Pop Art Focuses on Teamwork and Strategy at Offsite Retreat
By Chava Nesson Boyett, Project Manager

Under L.B. Day's guidance at the offsite retreat, the Pop Art team, now numbering 18 (and still growing), was able to assess the company's current growth phase and plan for future direction. Using tools such as open group discussion, individual presentations and breakout team problem-solving activities, each person was able to uncover his or her own strengths and weaknesses and ways in which each person contributes to their department and the team as a whole. With deeper understanding of each department's role the organization's overall strength and synergy is increased.

L.B. Day is president of L.B. Day & Company Inc., a Portland-based provider of executive-level strategic planning and organization development services. His clients have included Pharmacia-Upjohn, Intel, Raytheon, Sun Microsystems, AMD and Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. He serves on the board of Microchip Technology.

Over the two-day retreat, L.B. Day was able to assess the Pop Art team's dynamics. When asked to articulate his assessment, Day responded, "Pop Art retains a core leadership group that is exceptional. This team has high standards. This company is becoming more outer driven and customer-centric."

Several major outcomes of Pop Art's investment in the offsite retreat are plans for more intense customer focus and increased cross-departmental communication. Pop Art is implementing processes to give its customers better and more efficient control of their web site projects.

Pop Art's various departments (Account Management, Project Management, Design, Programming) are planning to collaborate more closely and effectively by working into our systems more frequent project meetings and more standard procedures.

"We want to make sure that our customers have the power and tools to direct multiple channel relationships and business processes on the web," says Pop Art CEO, Steve Rosenbaum.

"The Internet channel continues to grow. Organizations continue to develop increasingly important web projects; the technology and infrastructure continue to get better; and people keep bringing new and creative approaches to the web. Remaining flexible yet process-driven, Pop Art can provide exceptional products and services.

"The retreat brought out the best in us; every Pop Artist contributed insight and leadership to make us a stronger and more focused team. It was a terrific time," Rosenbaum stated in closing.
